Job Title: Laser Welding Engineer

Salary: $100k – $140k
Our client is a world leader in the development of new technologies which aim to connect R&D and manufacturing together. They are actively seeking a passionate individual for an engineering position focused on laser welding of metals. The successful candidate will support and guide a team in advancing laser welding technology.
The Laser Welding Engineer coordinates engineering tasks for laser-related projects and may lead projects as the principal investigator. They will assist higher-level engineers with research, lab work, or other tasks within the Lasers group, develop technical or business opportunities, and connect customers with the organization’s resources.
Essential Functions:
- Engage with customers to explore and understand their laser processing requirements.
- Develop strong working relationships with customers to ensure satisfaction and develop new project opportunities.
- Operate laser welding equipment/systems, supporting equipment, software, and hardware.
- Research new manufacturing technologies related to laser processing, request quotations, select vendors, issue requisitions, schedule demonstrations, and approve tooling.
- Lead research programs by collaborating with project managers, technicians, and engineers across other disciplines.
- Stay current with industry trends and technical advancements.
- Actively seek out various educational and training opportunities to demonstrate continuous growth.
- Identify and analyze problems, gather and sort relevant data, and process logically to determine preferred solutions.
- Write clear, concise, and accurate technical project reports, presentations, or other documents for customers and/or internal audiences.
- Deliver oral presentations meant to inform or persuade both internal (peer and manager) and external (client) audiences.
- Offer input on the focus of IRD funding and may develop proposals that require approval.
- Follow up and interact with customers on reactive sales transactions. Initiate the reactive sales process without guidance.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge and expertise in laser processing using 1-micron solid-state lasers.
- Understanding of optical systems and proficiency in experimental analysis.
- Tolerance for process development challenges and ability to adapt.
- Basic metallurgical knowledge of carbon steel, stainless steel, and nickel-based alloys.
- Initiative and creativity within assigned project work.
- Judgment in communication styles and behaviors; recognizes impact on other team members.
- Proficient written and verbal communication with customers both internal and external.
- Analyzes and understands the impact of individual contribution to project financial performance.
- Proven adaptability and flexibility as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain excellent customer relationships both internal and external.
- Proven success in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong ability to plan and organize tasks.
- Demonstrated passion for laser processes in manufacturing.
- Willingness to travel periodically (10-15%) to customers and conferences.
Education:
- B.S. in Welding Engineering, Material Science Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
Experience:
- Three (3) years’ experience in laser processing of metals and laser welding of metals using lasers.
- Three (3) years’ experience working in a research and development environment preferred.
- Metallurgical experience/background in carbon steel, stainless steel, and nickel-based alloys preferred.
